Hut Detail: The Ostander Hut is a Historic Hut similar to the Pear Lake Hut in Sequoia-Kings National Park. Built in 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corp the Hut offers a unique backcountry experience for people looking to explore the park in wintertime. The rustic nature of the building alone is almost reason enough to make the long trek out.
The Ostander Hut has a fully set kitchen for common use. The hut is completely stocked with wood for hear and has solar electricity just for lighting in the evenings. Simple toilet accommodations make this a nice option for hut based skiing in California.
Ski Terrain: The cirques above and adjacent to the Ostrander Hut offer fun intermediate to advanced backcountry ski terrain. Runs are between 700 and 1,200ft in elevation relief and the terrain immediately surrounding the hut can best be described as “mini golf”.
Roughly 6 miles to the North lays Yosemite Valley. From the South rim of The Valley there are multiple ways to ski to the floor of Yosemite Valley. All of the lines offer greater than 3,000ft of relief. All of these lines are expert to extreme terrain with high consequence avalanche hazard on and/or above the lines.
Local Avalanche Resource: The area has no avalanche center. People traveling in this area should have sufficient avalanche knowledge to care for themselves.
User Requirements: Hut is open to both guided and non-guided groups. All groups must acquire a wilderness permit before traveling to the hut.
Booking Details: Bookings open in November and can be book through the Yosemite Conservancy Website (https://www.yosemiteconservancy.org/facilities-reservation).
