Ice Climbing

California Mountain Guide, JB Brown, alpine ice climbingSome people scratch their heads at even the thought of ice climbing in California but in truth, the Sierra Nevada has a lot of good ice climbing both Waterfall Ice and Alpine Ice Climbing.

Lee Vining and June Lakes have a variety of single and multi-pitch routes.  It's the perfect location for those who are looking to learn to ice climb or refine their skills.  I am happy to teach individuals one on one or groups of friends who are out looking for a new weekend adventure.

Moonage Daydream WI4 M5.  This route is typically done in 5-7 pitches and is a marque objective for those who are capable of following WI 4.  Located near lodgepole California this is a shorter distance for people coming from the Bay Area but offers a much bigger more technical climb.

North Peak AI 3.  For some people learning to ice climb is just a means to climb new mountains and go to new places.  North Peak is a great one day objective for those learning to bring some alpine climbing into their skill set.  This spectacular multi-pitch snow and ice climb is a must do for budding California alpinists.

U-Notch and V-Notch AI 3 5.6  These routes are located in the Palisades of the Eastern Sierra. These two more advanced alpine ice routes are true alpinism objectives mixing rock, snow, and ice climbing.  They also each summit one of the California 14ers, Polemonium and North Palisade.
